I dropped by Coffee Stained Vinyl Studios in Bellville last week for a photo shoot and who do I see behind the mic in the vocal booth spitting some upbeat hip-hop rhymes? None other than famous South African actor Neels van Jaarsveld.
If you’ve never heard of Neels van Jaarsveld – he’s that guy who appeared in almost all of Zinkplaat’s music videos, he played in Binnelanders, he played the role of photographer João Silva in the iconic film adaptation of The Bang Bang Club and yes… he is the dude in that Klipdrift “Met-Eish-Ja” advert.
He also stars in the upcoming romantic Afrikaans comedy film Knysna which opens in theatres in two days.
Turns out Van Jaarsveld’s been a closet rapper for years and finally decided to out himself this year as The Enormous Dwarf when he joined forces with producer TeeJay Terblanche (New Holland, Black Handed Kites) aka TeeRex, to work on some tracks and an upcoming EP, due early 2015.
Upon hearing The Enormous Dwarf rap for the first time I was struck by how fucking good he actually is. I mean, imagine you find out that Afrikaans pop heartthrob Bobby van Jaarsveld can play rugby and all of a sudden he takes Handré Pollard’s place on Springbok flyhalf and he nails it at the World Cup… WTF?
Yes, The Enormous Dwarf had a similar effect on me so I decided then and there to sommer get the first official interview with the man, check it:
Today also see’s the release of “Summer Love” – The Enormous Dwarf’s first positive and upbeat track feat. TeeRex. You can download the free track via SoundCloud or you can simply listen to it on YouTube below:
