Gertjie Besselsen sings and plays the accordion, guitar, bouzouki and – fuck knows what else – in the Cape Town-based experimental folk and blues band – Mr Cat & The Jackal.
The band performed on the mainstage at this year’s Oppikoppi festival. They also recently released their 3rd full-length studio album called SET.
I caught up Besselsen the next morning at Kreefhotel after their Koppi performance and we talked about music, Europe, Beck, MK, relevance, SAMAs, Oppikoppi, labeling, DJ Invizable, SET, independence, the lack of music radio and tv channels etc. At the end we do an album swop – because that’s how we roll.
